Your thoughts can feel like a warm bathtub
How to interrupt familiar thought patterns, quiet your inner critic, and coach yourself forward

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to stay in a warm bathtub?
Even when you know you should probably get out, it’s comfortable.
And if you're anything like me, you add more hot water till the tub almost overflows a few times before you finally get out.
Our thoughts can be like that too.
We have thoughts we’ve been thinking for so long that they start to feel comfortable simply because they’re familiar.
I’m not good at this.
What if I mess it up?
I’m not ready yet.
Who am I to do this?
We may not like those thoughts, but we know them. So we keep soaking in them.
During my session today in The SpeakEasy, we talked about catching ourselves when we notice one of those familiar thought patterns.
And I shared an example of a warm bath and how comfortable it can be.
Imagine dropping a bath bomb into that warm tub.
You hold it under the water and suddenly...
Fizz.
The water starts moving. The color begins changing. Something that looked one way a few seconds ago starts to look completely different.
That’s what a pattern disrupter can do for our thoughts.
It gives us a moment to disrupt the automatic story instead of letting it run the show.
I worked with a client who was getting in her head about speaking. She was struggling with self-doubt and the things she was saying to herself before she ever opened her mouth and got on the stage.
So we started changing the conversation she was having with herself.
She wrote out 10 positive “I am” statements that her mind and body needed to hear.
Then she practiced saying them out loud while looking herself directly in the eyes in the mirror.
2x a day for a month, after she brushed her teeth in the morning and evening.
It became one of her pattern interrupters.
Instead of automatically soaking in the old thoughts, she was practicing giving herself something different to hear.
And that’s the part I want you to remember.
You don’t have to wrestle every negative thought to the ground like you're a UFC fighter.
Sometimes you just need to grab the thought.
And then coach yourself through what comes next.
Instead of letting that same familiar thought take over, pause and ask yourself a different question.
Is this actually true?
Is there any evidence that supports this thought?
Is the question I’m asking myself keeping me stuck or helping me move forward?
How has this shown up in the past?
What do I need right now to take the next step?
That’s self-coaching.
It’s learning to catch the thought before you automatically follow it down the same rabbit hole and giving yourself a chance to choose something different.
Why can’t I ever get this right?... is going to take you somewhere very different than...
“What could I try differently this time?”
Cheers,
Darlene
